Woolmanhill Network

As many of you know, a group of people are currently setting up a wireless network in the RGU Woolmanhill halls of residence.
This will allow us to do things like browse the net, play multiplayer games, share files, and chat to each other.

Current Status

At the moment we have got the phone line installed, and are awaiting our ADSL connection to be enabled. We are also awaiting the arrival of the access point (once we have that you can start connecting to the network, albeit without internet access yet).

Details

  • You will require a wireless network card. These can be purchased from as low as �40. We can purchase one for you if you are unable to do this.

  • Access will be less than �8 a month (potentially as low as �2 a month, depending on interest).

  • There will be a startup/administration cost of between �20 and �40. This is to pay for the equipment and the ADSL line. You may get some of this back at the end of the year, as we plan to sell the equipment once we're finished.

  • You are free to share your connection with your flatmates, however if they want access on their own computers over a LAN then they will have to pay the startup and monthly costs also. (This is to help keep costs for everyone down).

  • Security should not be an issue, as I'll be installing a linux-based firewall. However if you are worried then you are free to install your own personal firewall such as Zonealarm or BlackIce.

  • You may need to install an external directional antenna to obtain a signal from our access point - I can build one for you for about �5, or you can build your own out of old baked beans tins and some cable. Note this may not be neccesary, depending on which flat you live in.

  • If you have any trouble installing, I will be more than willing to help.
